Perpendicular Parking Tips

Pulling into a perpendicular stall:

1. The further away you are from the stall, the easier it will be to get into the stall. This gives you more room to maneuver and correct your positioning if needed. When turning to the left, you should already be a lane away from the stall, giving you plenty of room. It's a bit more difficult turning in right because you are on the right side of the isle. (If you live where you drive on the left side of the road it would be opposite) When turning into a stall from the right, move 1/4 to 1/2 of the way into the left lane, provided no oncoming cars are present, before you start your turn.

2. Use your side mirror as a reference point. You should see the mirror near the middle of the stall when you are in the position to turn into the center of the space. The mirror will be further ahead the longer the hood of the vehicle is.

3. Signal when turning into the parking space. This will communicate to other drivers as well as pedestrians in the isle you are turning from. Not signaling will deduct points on a drive test.

4. Move slow but turn fast. These are two of the most important parking rules, in any kind of parking. Moving slow gives you time to position your car in the stall, turning fast puts you in the right position at the right time in that small space.

5. Remember you usually have more space to the far side of the stall than what it seems, especially when turning left. Even so, still use caution with a vehicle parked in the next space. If in doubt, back up a little and straighten you vehicle.

6. The front curb or stall divider line will be under or a little behind the side mirror when you are within the stall without bumping the curb or crossing the line.

Backing Out of a Perpendicular stall.

1. before you get into the vehicle, check around for objects, people and especially children. The blind spot is much bigger behind than in front of your vehicle, making it much easier to hit something.

2. Generally it will be easier and safer to back out of a stall the direction you pulled into it. This is because of the position of your vehicle in the parking space.

3. Signal the direction you will be turning out of a stall. Again, it communicates to others and drive examiners will expect this on a test.

4. Move slow when backing, creeping back until you are sure no cars or people are beyond the vehicles on either side of you that you may not see.

5. Continually look every direction when backing out of a stall, including directly behind you for other cars pulling out. Pay a bit more attention to the direction you are turning your vehicle.

6. Keep your steering wheel turned the direction you are backing until you are nearly straight. I've seen some of my students stop before they are straight, thus aiming directly at the parked car ahead. If you turn back past the point of being straight, you will be aiming toward the vehicle on the opposite side of the isle. Once you are straight, put your vehicle in drive and drive out of the parking lot.

Using these rules should get you in and out of a perpendicular parking space easily with no collisions.
