The basic idea behind the Saleen Mustang S281 that debuted in 1996 is that it doesn't look at all like a typical Mustang. The designation of the hyped-out Stang was simply...The Saleen Mustang. Changing the call sign to be identified by it's 281 cubic inches is a really cool idea. But calling it "The Saleen 281 CID" is a long name. So the model became S281, S for Saleen. The option package letter or number ordered is added to the right of the 281 completing the call sign. 2002 the most powerful production Mustang is introduced, S281 Extreme with 445 Horsepower. There are only 62 Saleen Mustang S281s for 2002. 2003 Saleen S281-E there were only 14 street legal version of the GT road-racing series SCCA Extremes made this year.
